The Somme Nursing home is a charity providing treatment and quality care for service and ex-service persons since 1914.  It is registered as a general category nursing home with the Regulation & Quality Improvement Authority.   A home that is light and spacious with 50 ground-floor single en-suite beds.  A home that is conveniently located on the Circular Road, a semi-rural setting off the Holywood Road,  a quiet, leafy residential area creating an atmosphere of tranquillity.

Job Description

Reports to: Business Support Manager (BSM)

Responsible for:

  • Cooking and Supervising Kitchen Staff
  • Liaison with Staff
  • Liaison with Suppliers Under the direction from BSM

Job Purpose:  To assist with the provision of a high-quality great tasting food for our residents & staff.

Duties

  • Operating a very busy kitchen in a care home setting
  • Focusing on tasty, well balanced and nutritious meals with input from Nurse manager and the nursing team
  • To follow menu plans agreed with the Nurse Manager
  • Responsible for the preparation of the Menu plan with input from the Nursing Team
  • Have a strong knowledge of textured diets
  • Ensuring the foodservice achieves maximum efficiency, achieving a high standard of residents & staff satisfaction.
  • Adhered to all HACCP, Food Safety, and Health & Safety Legislation requirements
  • Working with the Business Support Manager to review menu costings and planning for seasonal business fluctuations
  • Ensuring all bookwork is completed within agreed timescales and company requirements.
  • Responsibility for all aspects of the service and team
  • Implementing staff training as required per company procedures
  • To take responsibility for the supervision of kitchen staff
  • Working with the Activities Coordinator to review and plan for upcoming events
  • Provide exceptional customer service to residents, their families & staff
  • To maintain staff Performance Management process
  • To ensure staff absences are recorded
  • To liaise as appropriate regarding staff cover.
  • To occasionally assist with special functions which may be outside of normal working hours.

Job Description

Domestic Cleaning

  • To assist in providing a clean, healthy, and hygienic environment for residents and staff that complies with Health & Safety and COSHH standards.
  • Be responsible for ensuring the home looks, feels and smells nice for our residents as well as visitors to the home.
  • To achieve a high standard of cleanliness in order to maintain a clean, pleasant and safe environment and to reduce the risk of infection
  • Clean and conduct domestic duties as required by the work schedules produced by the Senior Domestic/Laundry/Kitchen Supervisor
  • Organise day-to-day cleaning duties to best suit the needs of the home.  This includes cleaning of beds, mopping, damp dusting, cleaning of internal glass, walls, vacuuming, scrubbing (manual & machine), steam cleaning and buffing
  • Perform ‘deep’ and ‘special’ cleans in accordance with training given and method statements provided by Senior Supervisor
  • Changing of curtains and cleaning of blinds
  • Ensure that all bedrooms, bathrooms, and communal areas are properly cleaned and maintained throughout the building.
  • Work as part of the Domestic/Laundry/Kitchen team and respond to requests from Nursing Staff, and Management team of the Home in relations to relation to work priorities, local protocols and procedures
  • Adapt to unforeseen demands and tasks as appropriate to the environment and the grade
  • Working in accordance with all COSHH, Health and Safety and Manual Handling Policies as issued by the Trust

Laundry

  • Be responsible for the overall cleanliness of the Home and ensure that the laundry of residents is to the highest standard, including well-presented ironed clothes and bedding. Ensure that residents’ laundry is collected and correctly labelled to minimise lost items of clothing. Work with the Homemakers to ensure the personal clothing of residents is put away in a neat and tidy manner
  • Ensure that all cleaning and laundry equipment is correctly and appropriately used and kept in a safe condition. Report any defects to the Maintenance team. To comply with COSHH and Health & Safety regulations, ensuring the correct use of personal protective equipment and follow the proper use of colour code systems within the home
  • As directed by Senior Domestic Supervisor to ensure that daily/weekly housekeeping tasks are completed as required and regular deep cleans are programmed to ensure the presentation of the Home is always at its best
  • Be sensitive to the privacy and individual needs of the residents and ensure all necessary documentation is completed daily.
  • Maintain standards of infection control within the laundry area and generally within the home and to assist residents to maintain their own infection control needs.
  • Operate the washing machine/driers and other equipment to launder household clothes, linen and residents’ personal clothing. Work within HSAW guidelines in operating all cleaning machinery, whilst maintaining skills in their usage and safe storage Understand stock control and stock rotation and ensure ordering of agreed stock is completed within budget and in a timely manner.
  • At all times maintain courtesy, respect and dignity to colleagues, residents and their visitors
  • Carry out other duties as may be assigned from time to time by Senior Domestic Supervisor

Duty : Kitchen Assisting

  • Assisting Cook with the preparation and serving of meals
  • Ensuring all crockery, utensils and cooking equipment are washed and ready for use of each meal
  • Preparation of tables in the dining room and trolleys for carrying food each mealtime
  • Ensure food is appropriately managed with regard to checking on arrival for quantity, quality and use-by date
  • Ensure food is stored appropriately and stock rotation is carried out. Inform Cook of any problems
  • Ensure all stock ordered is consistent with planned menus that reflect choice and preference
  • Ensure appropriate waste disposal of used foods and bags/bins emptied daily

Job Description

  • To help in the care of the residents’ physical environment and in the general day-to-day activities of the home.
  • To support the nursing staff in the total care of all patients.
  • To share with other staff in meeting the personal care needs of residents in a way that respects the dignity of the individual and promotes independence.

Principal responsibilities

  • To assist residents who need help with dressing, undressing, bathing and toileting.
  • To help residents with mobility problems and other disabilities including incontinence.
  • Help in use and care of aids and personal equipment.
  • To care for residents temporarily sick and needing e.g. bed nursing.
  • To help care for residents who are dying.
  • To help in the promotion of mental and physical activity of residents through talking to them, taking them out, sharing with them in activities such as reading, writing, hobbies and recreations.
  • To make and change beds; tidy rooms and do light cleaning; empty commodes.
  • To feed residents who need help; help tidy and clear the dining room.
  • Answer emergency bells, the door and the telephone; greet visitors.
